Description

THE Swiss 2016 of Duemani is often considered by international critics to be one of the greatest masterpieces of Luca D'AttomaThe vintage 2016 is a year of absolute grace in Tuscany, combining perfect maturity with aristocratic freshness.
The name "Suisassi" literally means "on the pebbles", recalling that Syrah vines are planted on the rockiest and poorest plots of domaine in Riparbella.

The Duemani vineyard does not resemble the smooth landscapes of classic Tuscany. It is a natural amphitheater situated at 250-300 meters above sea level, on the foothills overlooking the Tyrrhenian Sea. Marine influence: Proximity to the sea provides constant ventilation, essential for the health of the grapes and for giving a natural "salinity" to the wines. The soil of "Galestro": The land is extremely poor, rocky and calcareous. It is a difficult soil that forces the vine to suffer in order to produce small, but incredibly concentrated, berries. Duemani is one of the pioneers and fervent advocates of biodynamic agriculture in Italy (Demeter certified). Respecting the cycle: No chemicals are used. The work follows astral rhythms to strengthen the soil's vitality. Planting density: The vines are planted very closely together (10,000 vines per hectare), which creates competition between the roots and increases the quality of the fruit. The Amphora: The domaine is famous for its use of terracotta jars (amphorae) for winemaking and aging, allowing micro-oxygenation which respects the purity of the fruit without "masking" it with the taste of wood.

Owner and history

Located on the Costa Toscana (the Tuscan coast), in the Riparbella area, this domaine Duemani is the personal project of the renowned oenologist Luca D'Attoma and Elena Celli. Unlike the historic estates of Montalcino or Chianti, Duemani is a modern adventure, born in 2000 on a virgin hill.

Vinification and aging

Spontaneous fermentation takes place in temperature-controlled conical oak vats, followed by approximately 30 days of skin maceration with brief pump-overs. Aging began in December 2019, and the wine spent 22 months in 225/228-liter French oak barrels, 80% of which were new and 20% new oak. It is neither fined nor filtered.

The team's opinion

The 2016 Suisassi received stratospheric scores (from critics such as Robert Parker and James Suckling). It is compared to the greatest Syrahs of the Northern Rhône (Hermitage or Côte-Rôtie) but with that thickness and that sea breeze characteristic of the Tuscan coast.
