Château le Pin

5 products

The Château Le Pin is not just a wine, it is a modern myth that has shaken up the Bordeaux hierarchy in just a few decades. Located on the prestigious sector of the Pomerol plateau, this domaine is the archetypal “garage wine” (although this label has become too narrow for it), where absolute rarity meets a quest for almost artisanal perfection.

An Exceptional Micro-Vineyard

The rarity of Le Pin begins with its size. While the great châteaux of the Médoc extend over dozens of hectares, Le Pin is a garden.

  • Surface : Only 2.7 hectares (approximately 6 acres).

  • Terroir: A unique enclave composed of old graves very deep on a subsoil of "iron filth". Unlike the heavy clays of its neighbor PetrusThis stony soil allows for early ripening and gives the wine a finesse and a more "exotic" aromatic profile.

  • The story: Acquired in 1979 by the Thienpont family (already owners of Vieux Château Certan), THE domaine was then a simple plot of land without château. The name simply comes from the two umbrella pines that stand near the small winemaking building.

The Quintessence of Merlot

The pine tree is almost exclusively composed of 100% MerlotWhile this grape variety is often associated with roundness, here it reaches an additional dimension.

  • Style : It is often described as the most "Burgundian" wine of Bordeaux. It possesses an elegance, a silky texture and a floral aroma rarely found in other great wines.

  • Winemaking: The work is manual and extremely meticulous. Fermentation takes place in temperature-controlled stainless steel tanks before aging in new oak barrels (often 100%). Wine has this rare ability to "absorb" the wood, retaining only its structure without its taste.

Aromatic Profile: "The Exoticism of Pomerol"

Enjoying a glass of Le Pin is a sensory experience marked by a very recognizable signature:

  • The Nose: An explosion of dark fruits (blackberry, black cherry), violet and truffle. It often develops notes of toast, coffee and sweet spices (cinnamon, vanilla) which give it an opulent and mysterious side.

  • The Mouth: What is striking is the velvetyThe tannins are exceptionally fine-grained, giving an impression of cashmere or silk. Despite its high concentration, the wine retains incredible freshness and lightness.

Why is it so coveted?

Several factors explain the price and prestige of this wine (often among the most expensive in the world):

  1. The Tiny Production: Only 4,000 to 6,000 bottles per year. On a global scale, this is a drop in the ocean, making the allocation of bottles extremely difficult.

  2. The Judgment of Robert Parker: In the 1980s, the famous American critic fell in love with this vintage, awarding it top marks and propelling its rating to the top.

  3. The Prestige Thienpont: The management by Jacques Thienpont provides a guarantee of expertise and a long-term vision that prioritizes quality over volume.

Le Pin is a wine of pure emotion. Where other great wines impress with their power or austerity, Le Pin seduces with its immediate charm, luxurious texture, and endless finish. It is one of the rare wines that justifies its legendary status the moment the cork is uncorked.
