History of the Estate Château Léoville Poyferré

the story of Château Léoville Poyferré

From the Léoville estate to the Château Léoville Poyferré

        A prestigious history

The origins of the Léoville estate date back to 1638. Alexandre de Gascq Léoville became its owner a century later, in 1740. He gave it his name and initiated a major renovation. Extensive work was carried out, from the vineyards to the cellars, allowing the Château to rank among the finest wines of the region.MedocAt his death, the Léoville estate was the largest in the Médoc, comprising a total of 120 hectares. His heirs carefully managed the vast lands until the need to divide them became apparent. The Léoville estate was then subdivided. In 1840, Baron Jean-Marie Poyferré de Cerès acquired one of these parcels. He decided to add his name to that of Léoville and thus created theChâteau Léoville PoyferréThis one will be named Second Growth Classified in the famous 1855 classification.

It was only later, in 1920, that the Cuvelier family acquired Château Léoville Poyferré. They established it as one of the benchmark wines of its appellation. Didier Cuvelier took over management in 1979. Anne Cuvelier, for her part, has been in charge of wine tourism and public relations for Château Léoville Poyferré since 2006.

Building the present and serving the future

By learning lessons from the past

Today, the skills and dynamism of the team ofLéoville Poyferréallow it to maintain its level of excellence. Indeed, numerous efforts have been made for over thirty years on this fabulous 80-hectare vineyard. Completely restructured and replanted, it benefits from state-of-the-art equipment and the latest technological advancements. The Château team is constantly striving for improvement. However, great importance is placed on maintaining a precious balance between modernity and tradition. It is its origins that have built the grandeur of theLéoville Poyferré estateFar from being forgotten, they are a true source of pride. The estate's barrel cellars exemplify the respect shown for this invaluable Médoc heritage. This philosophy not only maintains the quality and preserves the traditions of the Château but, above all, forges the unique style of Léoville Poyferré.

        Learning about the vineyard

        Quality and finesse

The vineyard's grape varieties are composed of 61% ofCabernet Sauvignon27% ofMerlot8% ofPetit Verdotand 4% ofCabernet FrancIts terroir, composed of gravel, provides a perfect balance in vine nutrition. Preserving the quality of this land and understanding it intimately is therefore paramount. To this end, numerous tastings of the grapes are conducted. These tastings help determine the ideal harvest date. All observations are recorded and contribute to the vineyard analysis. Thanks to this method, the harvest plan is refined year after year. Furthermore, the harvest is carried out manually, and each plot has its own dedicated winemaker. This winemaker prunes the vines "the old-fashioned way," following Médoc traditions. The winery ofChâteau Léoville PoyferréIt has no fewer than fifty-six stainless steel tanks. The winemaking process is carried out by grape variety and by plot.

The teams ofLéoville PoyferréThey believe that the ideal blend requires not only considerable experience but also a great deal of creativity. Research and innovation allow them to reveal pure fruit and remarkably delicate aromas in the Château's wines.
