From the 17th century to the present day
The birth ofChâteau Grand-Puy Ducassedates back to the 17th century whenArnaud Ducassebuys Jacques de Ségur's little house. At the time, there were no vines on the land yet, it isPierre Ducassewho would be the instigator. Indeed, until his death in 1797, he devoted himself to acquiring new land and planting vines in the communes of Pauillac, Saint-Lambert, and Saint-Sauveur. His son then succeeded him and notably built the château we know today on the site of the original small house.Château Grand-Puy Ducassewill then be awarded5th Classified Growth of Pauillac in 1855The estate was known at the time as Artigues Arnaud. Indeed, the civil society of the name ofGrand-Puy DucasseIt was not until 1932 that the vineyard was established. Since 2004, it has belonged to the CA Grands Crus subsidiary of Crédit Agricole.Anne Le Naourat its head, in the position of technical director. The excellent terroir of Château Grand-Puy Ducasse
The vineyard ofChâteau Grand-Puy Ducasseaccount today40 hectares, planted with 62% Cabernet Sauvignon and 38% Merlot. It benefits from an ideal terroir for viticulture, typical of thePauillac appellationThree main plots are indeed distinguished, situated on silico-gravelly Garonne soils. Driven by the desire to maintain the estate at its highest level, worthy of its 5th Growth Classified status, successive owners have not hesitated to invest in continuously modernizing production.
Thus, as early as 1971, there was a strong desire to modernize theChâteau Grand-Puy Ducassebeginning with the expansion and restructuring of the vineyard. In 1980, the winery was renovated, with the installation of new sorting tables. In 1991, the sorting tables were moved into the vineyard to allow for the immediate sorting of harvested grapes. The harvest is indeed done entirely by hand, in strict accordance with Médoc tradition. The grapes are thus sorted several times with the utmost care to retain only the finest berries for the production of great wines.
