The Bolgheri appellation is located in Italy, in the Tuscany region. It takes its name from the small village of Bolgheri, near the Mediterranean Sea. It covers only 1,200 hectares of vineyards and a great diversity of terroirs. Known for the legendary Sassicaia wine, the appellation is the birthplace of Super Tuscan wines. In 1940, traditional French grape varieties were introduced to the region. Initially used on a family estate, Cabernet Sauvignon and Cabernet Franc from Château Lafitte gradually became more widely cultivated. The vineyards are structured in terraces of alluvial and clay soils. The Mediterranean climate, strongly influenced by the sea, allows Bordeaux grape varieties to thrive. The Bolgheri DOC was created in 1983 and initially included only white and rosé wines. Red wine producers had to use the table wine label. In 1994, the appellation authorized the production of red wines and was divided into three: Bolgheri Rosso, Bolgheri Superiore, and Bolgheri Sassicaia. Bolgheri reds must be two years old at the time of their release. Domaine Le Macchiole is a family affair. These passionate winemakers settled in the region in the 1980s, cultivating this still relatively unknown terroir. They planted international grape varieties and took advantage of the absolutely ideal climate to produce wines of great finesse. Today, the quality of their wines has won over even the most discerning wine lovers, making Le Macchiole an undisputed benchmark for Bolgheri.
