Domaine de la Mongestine
Historic property undergoing a complete renovation
This estate has been cultivated using historical methods, as evidenced by the millennia-old remains and pottery fragments found in the soil. The estate's name is a legacy of this centuries-old monastic period: Monge means Monk in Occitan.
For the past fifteen years or so, the estate has been under new ownership and is once again producing superb wines. The estate has embraced natural winemaking and environmental responsibility, resulting in wines with a distinctive character. Since 2014, Céline and Harry have been running this 115-hectare estate and are gradually renovating the buildings and vineyards.
The Mongestine vineyard
Organic vineyards nestled in a natural setting
Since 2014, the vineyard has been organic across its entire 114 hectares, including 30 hectares of vines. These vines are situated on very stony, clay-limestone slopes. The vineyard lies east of the Côteaux d'Aix-en-Provence appellation, facing the windy Luberon corridor. The vines benefit from a wide variety of soils: clay-limestone at the bottom, very stony at the foot of the hills, and sandy and gravelly areas.
The soils are worked with the utmost respect for the terroir, in a rich soil naturally teeming with microorganisms. Judicious pruning and minimal treatment of the vines allow them to develop to their fullest potential. Mechanical equipment is carefully selected to limit the number of passes and thus reduce damage to the vines.
The vineyards reach an altitude of 450 meters in the heart of a wild and unspoiled natural environment. This allows the full typicity of the terroir to be expressed in the glass.
The wines of the estate
Natural winemaking for authentic wines
All wines are made without added yeasts, enzymes, or sulfur, using the most natural methods possible. The wines are unfiltered, except for the Rosé Monges. Vinification is carried out by plot and by grape variety. Aging takes place on the lees, in barrels and/or concrete eggs, depending on the cuvée.
The diversity of grape varieties allows us to take advantage of the complex soils and produce wines under the IGP or AOC Côteaux d'Aix-en-Provence designations. Vinified and crafted with precision, the estate's wines offer excellent value for money, vintage after vintage.
- The wines in the "Monges" range are classic
- Single-varietal wines offer a modern version of terroir expression.
